The Joy of Reading

My son read his first book this week. I use the term "read" loosely. He did a tiny bit of decoding but relied heavily on pictorial and context cues. (The book had a simple repetitive pattern which would allow even a toddler to pretty much recite it from memory.)

I'll never forget the look on his face when he was done. Such a sense of accomplishment!

ME: Joshy, I am so proud of you!!!
JOSH: Can you tell all your friends on Facebook?

Ha! Not sure if that line says more about him... or more about me?

(But if you were ever confused about the difference between showing and telling, there is some excellent showing for you!)

And, how funny about the Facebook comment! :-)

Yeah, I guess actually it is more a comment on our society than it is about either of us.

My husband and I saw the Facebook movie the other night.. the whole thing is quite a fascinating phenomenon.

Go Josh, Go! That is awesome. I had that experience with my second son recently and there is just nothing better than that glowing smile!

Here's to a lifetime of reading joy!

SO cute--I love listening to my daughter "read" her books from memory. She even changes up her voice!

(At least he's not telling his friends on HIS Facebook!)

I loved when my kids would "read" me books they'd memorized. Whether it's memorization or actual reading, it's still a big accomplishment.

Awww, Corey! That is such a special moment. My daughter is 14 now, but I remeber her reading to me. She was full of pride at her hew skill. I love that your son was so proud that he wanted you to share it with the world on facebook. I hope you told him you blogged about it. :) You can tell him that we are all proud of him too.

My daughter is in this early stage of reading. It's so fun to watch her learn, figure things out, and READ.

That is priceless! Love it! My big ballerina basically memorized When Sophie Gets Angry when she was 2 b/c she asked for it over and over. We videotaped her "reading" it one day and she still believes that she was reading at 2 b/c of it. Hey, it boosts her confidence so I guess it's not a bad thing.
