When Did I Become So Ditzy?

I have been extremely ditzy lately. I'll pre-heat the oven and then 20 minutes later, my kids will say, "I'm hungry. Where's dinner?" and I'll realize that I completely forgot to put the chicken nuggets in! Is it because I am past 40? Because I am obsessed with my WIP? Because I play musical beds all night? Probably all of the above.

But, if I am going to be totally honest, the ditziness really isn't new. I have been this way for at least a decade. How do I know?

Here's how...

When David and I got married in 2002, our friend, Steve, (the guy who introduced us) asked if he could read some emails from David aloud to our guests. "Sure!" we said.

These are the first few emails:

MAY, 2000

DAVID: Hi, can I get Corrie's number?

OCT 2000

DAVID: Hi, can I get Cori's number again? Never called her.

JAN 2001

STEVE: How's it going with Corey?

DAVID: Pretty good, I think. There seems to be someone very bright under that ditzy exterior.

Ha! So, there you have it. I've been ditzy for at least as long as my husband has known me.

It's the effect of multi-tasking! Every Mom/Wife/Writer suffers from it. Don't feel bad - last week I put my wallet in the fridge and the mayo in my purse.

I agree with Amy -- multi tasking makes everything feel crazy.
And at least you know yuo're husband loves you despite of (or maybe because of) the ditzy moments :)

I once couldn't find my baby's pacifier and later found it wrapped in a paper towel on top of the lettuce in the Tupperware in the fridge- so you know, it happens to the best of us. :)

I am genetically built to be ditzy. in fact, I'm a THOUSAND times ditzier than the next person. It makes my writing very...interesting. The email thread totally cracked me up and made me feel more normal at the same time.

I totally fall in the same category. I can't tell you how many times hubby has come to my rescue. Microwave on fire from drying a bra. Running into a trash can. Blah. Blah.

Yep, add me to the club.

Word Origin & History

ditzy
also ditsy, "stupid, scatterbrained" (esp. of women), late 1970s U.S. slang, of unknown origin, perhaps related to earlier slang dicty (1926) "conceited, snobbish," also of unknown origin. The noun ditz (1984) is a back-formation.

That's not my girl! No way!
OMG! I forgot to put the ice cream in the oven!
Love,
Pa

Ha, ha! Tamika, I set the kitchen on fire this week, too!

Yes, but who forgot the phone number the first time around?

I lost my Cheerios this morning. They already had milk on them and everything. Luckily, I found them before my cat did. Sadly, the place I found them? Was in plain sight on the kitchen counter. And I looked for quite a while before I discovered them there.

Also, I lose my coffee cup on a near-daily basis. Usually it's still full, and that's why. My sister says they need to invent a type of coffee that gives you an advance on alertness. I agree.

Glad it's not just me. :)

Too cute! My husband once said something very similar to describe me. I'm known as the queen of forgetfulness and disorganization around here. Maybe it's my blonde hair. :-)

And does he spell your name right now? Or not? Ha ha ha!

Dude I can write the book on ditzy. The other day I tried to drink my coke with the cap on and then I put different shoes on my feet and my 4 year old actually had to tell me that my flip flops didn't match. HA! How embarrassing, right?

Over 40? check. Distracted by my WIP? check. "Hey mom, look at me!" check. Ditzy comes with the territory. Just think what a great character you'll make when you write your autobiography!
Thanks for making me feel like I'm not the only one!

I think it runs in the family. My dad missed our exit in Mass once and didn't realize it until he hit Canada!! So, when I mess up in this game, you can blame it on my genetics.

Corey Schwartz said...

Ha, ha! Canada? Laura, that is hilarious!

I had no idea there were so many other ditzy people out there. Yay!

Kelly Polark said...

I'm ditzy too, and I've been told so! Hurray for intelligent, yet ditzy people! We shall rule the world one day!

Um, true story. The first time my husband asked me for my phone number, I couldn't remember it and had to call information (I had, actually, just moved. I'm not THAT ditzy.) Then, information gave me the wrong number (Again, not THAT ditzy. I may not have had it memorized, but I could at least recognize a wrong number when I heard it!) Anyway, the second phone call to information produced the right number. And a first date.

In my family, we call it boneheadedness, and we actually give out a bonehead award at the end of the year. We celebrate relatively intelligent people doing relatively stupid stuff.

You just described ME! I email my friend over and over asking her for the babysitter's # b/c I write it down on a scrap that inevitably gets thrown away.

Ditz's unite! Good luck with your WIP. Sounds like your knee deep in it. :)

Too funny!! And, I love the multiple spellings of your name.

And, yeah. It's pretty much ditz-central around here.

Ha! What a cute story. I'm sure it's (partly) your ditziness that makes you such a good writer. You think nonlinearly.

Rebecca Gomez said...

Hmmm...maybe your husband has made you ditzy! And I'm sure at least part of it is due to "mommy drain brain."

But your brain was working fine this morning when we brainstormed, so you have your moments. :-)

lisa and laura said...

Ooh, I can't wait to hear more about how your WIP is going.

And love that you're a fellow ditz. Reassuring on so many levels.

definitely from your dad's side of the family.
(hey, what's the tv remote doing in my phone

That is too funny! I love that you have the e-mails ... which, by the way, you can give HIM a bad time about, since he spelled your name wrong/differently each time he e-mailed Steve! :-)

Michelle McLean said...

LOL yeah, I think the ditziness is an occupational hazard :) My college friends told me they were really surprised to learn that I had a 4.0 GPA because I came across as such an airhead. *shrugs*

Tana said...

Aww.... Guess what my friend? You are not alone. I am a major blonde in every way and I am off to a rockin ditzy start this new year. I've already done so many goofy things I could drown in a sea of embarrassment.

Hi Corey, thanks for another fun read post. As I'm told when I do something silly, it's a blond thing.

Shelli (srjohannes) said...

its a mom thing - too much to remember.

Jonathon Arntson said...

If it's a mom thing, then I'm screwed and undefined. I have put the cereal in the fridge and the milk in the cupboard a million times, it's the expensive Lactaid milk too!!

Oh, haha! I'm betting my husband thinks the EXACT same thing about me :) I will sometimes have a conversation with him in my head, then look at him, waiting for him to respond. He'll just look at me and say "You think you spoke out loud, don't you?"

5 Kids With Disabilities said...

We're not really ditsy, it's just that our brains are so full of stuff and things to remember that sometimes something gets pushed aside, (like putting the chicken nuggets in the oven.) More than once I've been blogging away while my bathwater overflowed...(Shhhhh! Don't tell my husband, he'll think I'm ditsy. I"ve managed to hide it from him...)

Corey - It adds to the flavor of life! I put a stack of library books on the top of my stationwagon right after checking them out and drove off through town. It was fun driving back to retrieve them on Main street :) And, the librarians and I now know each other well!

That is so cute! I think that was a nice idea to read the emails at your wedding. It sounds like a movie love story.

I like your blog too. Its really interesting!

Keep up the good work.
