Every Word Matters

Sometimes my husband comes home and asks me, "How was your meeting with your writing partner, Becky?"

And I say, "We spent like an hour arguing over one word."

That may seem insane.

But Janet Reid has an amazing post about how the placement of one word can make all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the link. I had a similar thing with my writing buddy and the word appreciation. It's kind of a standing joke now with us. :)

You are so right! I have had multiple arguments lasting for hours all because of a word or two. Ah, the joys of wordsmithing! :-)

I so agree--especially in picture books!

This is so true when your whole ms has less than 500 words! I struggled with wording on a query for a story that was written in a folktale format...a critique buddy looked at and said, "It reads like a folktale." Sometimes fresh eyes make the difference. :-)

Dude, I spent a whole writing day on 4 lines one time. Whole day. 4 lines.

We don't argue. We debate. Strongly. :-)

I get this. I argued for the word "obsessed." Was told it was "too old" for a picture book. I've read PB's with tons of big words. I don't think obsessed is too much.

That's awesome to have a writing partner who will let you argue for an hour over one word!

Yup, this is me. I can spend hours just rearranging two sentences. It's important.
